Sala Mala-Saña
Sala Mala-Saña is a cultural association that has been teaching drama in an non-formal context to amateur adults in Madrid (Spain) since 2005. They sought to fill an educational gap in the city as no other centre of this kind existed at the time. The main objective of the association is to promote theatre and its multiple social and communicative benefits. All staff are trained professional actors with teaching experience and qualifications in social and personal development, such as social work, Gestalt psychology and drama pedagogy.
Their workshops offer educational opportunities at all levels from beginners to advanced and run every day of the week from October to June for any adult (18 and older) who wishes to engage in creative performance activities within multicultural and intergenerational groups. The association has an inclusive policy and their active learners come from a variety of national and international backgrounds and range in age from late teens to octogenarians; some learners have special needs, and others, physical disabilities.
Drama classes include games and group dynamics, improvisation, voice and singing activities, and work towards a final public performance making use of the association’s own stage and of other local cultural centres and schools. Sala Mala-Saña also has its own theatre company, Teatro Aficionado (Amateur Theatre), run by and for learners; they have performed at national amateur competitions. The company has performed scripts by international authors such as Alonso de Santos, Tennessy Williams, Sergi Belbel, Neil Simon, Chekhov, Paco Mir and Woody Allen.
Sala Mala-Saña produced and performed Pablo Aranda’s play La entrevista as a collaboration for the 2010 Entreprise Civil Responsibility Awards organised by Red Cauces, Asociación Eslabón and the Comunidad de Madrid in the European Commission in Spain. Red Cauces and Asociación Eslabón are non-profit organizations that provide help and advice to those with integration difficulties (prisoners on probation, older mature housewives that have never worked, women who have suffered from domestic violence) and offer to mediate with companies to find them jobs, and Sala Mala-Saña is proud to have collaborated with them in this award.
