Associazione Fiumana
The Associazione Fiumana is a cultural, non-profit association based in Mesola, Ferrara (Italy). It consists of a group of teachers (both professionals and volunteers) and learners of all ages who are interested in the performing arts, drama pedagogy and social theatre. The main objectives of the association are the creation of drama, music and other performances, the promotion of reading and writing for theatre, intercultural mediation and the organisation of cultural events.
The association carries out numerous types of local activities. It organises creative, dissemination and promotional activities and runs non-formal and informal educational activities to facilitate an intercultural and intergenerational dialogue. It also develops and applies new tools and expressive and communicative approaches related to the arts, traditions, writing, literature, music, theatre and cultural events.
Teachers tend to work in small teams and run amateur theatre projects for learners of all ages and from all backgrounds. For instance, we work with a group of older women who have little access to other learning opportunities, and have developed with them intergenerational theatrical productions that enable them to share their personal and communal histories with younger generations.
Our trainers constantly strive to improve their own competences by participating regularly as learners alongside other amateur actors in projects run by colleagues.
Amateur actors develop skills that enable them to take part in street and stage performances. These include techniques such as verbal and non-verbal communication, and improvisation. The association also runs creative writing workshops, and manages theatre projects for school learners which result in the production of plays in the mother tongue or in a foreign language.
In Fiumana we are convinced that theatre is a universal language, and that drama skills are transferable to other disciplines, other contexts and even to daily communication. We see the synergies between drama and language education, and are keen to explore them further through this partnership.
